The Ningxia region in the North West of China is
traditionally and more recently scientifically renowned for producing
the highest quality Goji berries.
In fact the Ningxia wolfberry – a
local name for Goji Lycium barbarum - is the only variety of wolfberry
to appear in the Chinese medical text the Pharmacopoeia of the People's
Republic of China.
The high quality of this regions crop is widely attributed to the
mineral-laden Yellow River creating a rich and fertile flood plain with
alpine temperatures that ensure an ideal growing environment for Lycium
barbarum.
One of China's five autonomous regions, Ningxia is also culturally rich
lying on the path of the famous Silk Road trading route with ancient
tombs, ruins of The Great Wall Of China framed by a temperate
continental climate of long, cold winters and short, hot summers with
the temperature being lowest in January, averaging from -10C to -7C and
highest in July, averaging from 17C to 24C.
The rich land resources, abundant sunshine and irrigation from the
Yellow River have distinct agricultural advantages - for example,
watermelon, apple, and grape from the area have a 15-20% higher sugar
content than those produced in central China.
